Mining company wanted to reduce fuel costs by encouraging safer, more efficient driving behaviors. Drivers needed motivation to change habits built over years—and the solution needed to feel rewarding, not punitive.

Conducted interviews with drivers to understand their relationship with their vehicles
Researched gamification mechanics from racing games and tracking apps
Designed point system, badges, and leaderboards

Researched racing games and tracking apps to inspire the incorporation of gamification elements like points, badges, and leader-boards incentive driver performance improvement.
Understanding existing behaviors and motivations is crucial when designing gamification. Rather than forcing new habits, I built on the pride and competitiveness drivers already felt, making fuel efficiency a natural extension of their work identity.

Interviewed mining truck drivers in order to understand their context & which gamification aspects already existed in their work.

Key Insight: Drivers already had pride in their vehicles and routes—they just needed visibility into their performance and friendly competition to make fuel efficiency engaging.

Gamification works best when it aligns with existing motivations. By understanding what drivers already cared about—their skills, their routes, their performance—I created a system that made fuel efficiency feel like recognition of excellence rather than an obligation.
